I’ve gotten the chance to use a lot of Bosch lasers over the past year, lets see how this 50-ft GLL50 model compares to the rest.
At first this looks very similar to the Bosch GLL30, just a little larger. Upon opening the package it comes with all of the same features, but everything is slightly larger/bulkier. The GLL30 is a 30-ft laser, whereas this GLL50 is a 50-ft laser.
Like the GLL30, the GLL50 comes with a reflector card, 3 AAA batteries, the laser, a bag, and and an adjustable mounting bracket for mounting to various surfaces. So-far every cross-line laser level I’ve received from Bosch has had these key ingredients. The reflector card gives you a target to aim at, and the mounting bracket allows you to clip this on to various surfaces so you can use it at different heights, rather than just setting it on the ground. This is more of a function for framers and grid-ceiling guys than it is for electricians.
All of Bosch’s laser tools come with a nylon protective carrying case, which is outstanding. You won’t have to worry about this getting battered up when throwing tools on it, or if it happens to roll around your work truck throughout the day. The one complaint that I have for every one of these laser kits, is that NONE of the other accessories fit in the bag. So i personally have 5 reflective cards and 5 adjustable mounting brackets for all of my lasers, and they’re all just sitting in my garage unused. It would be nice if the bags were slightly larger so you could fit everything that comes with it, in the protective case with the tool. Even if that means making the accessories smaller and collapsable. Honestly though, as an electrician I seldom use any of the accessories. All I need is the laser.
This is a very easy to use laser, and with a 50-ft range this is more than ample for an electrician to use to layout a ceiling on a new construction job, or to mark out remodel cans in an existing house. It has both a vertical, and horizontal laser that cross in the middle, and there’s a female threaded hole in the bottom of the laser which allows you to screw it on to a tripod and adjust the height you want the horizontal line to be set at.
There are 2 buttons on the back of the tool which allow you to choose between horizontal, vertical, and cross-line (both horizontal and vertical), and one of the coolest features of this model is the pendulum system inside which allows the tool to self-level (to a degree). You can choose to lock the laser output where you want it, or let it self-level - both with the selector lever on the side of the tool.

Easy-to-use laser setup modes projects vertical, horizontal and cross lines
Versatile job layout lines can be projected separately or together for a variety of level and alignment applications
Smart pendulum system allows tool to self-level, and it indicates out-of-level condition
Secure laser transport after switching off, pendulum is locked
Simple keypad operation easily select among the layout modes
BM3 positioning device provides fast setup and micro fine height adjustment
Robust over-molded construction built to IP54 dust- and water-protection standards
I personally used this laser on a daily basis until the newer 360-degree model came out. Having the 360-degree lines on 3 planes really makes all other crossline-lasers obsolete, however that being said - this GLL50 is what you want if you’re looking in a slightly more forgiving price-range. For its price it’s a hell of a tool. It’s more than capable of doing what you’ll need with it, and it is very reliable for even the most professional of users. This gets 4 out of 5 stars in my book.
