The Bosch 400’ laser measuring tool is super bad ass. I’ve tried a few different brands, and other Bosch models of laser measuring tools/range finders and I’m always a little disappointed. Most of what’s marketed to us are the lower end models of these tools. So you’ll get anything from 100’ to 150’ on average. But what we do, especially in commercial, industrial, and large custom homes, requires at least 200’ to 300’.
Unfortunately every laser I’ve tried, including this one, are impossible to use outdoors. It’s marketed on the packaging for indoor/outdoor use, but I very quickly loose track of the laser and can’t see what I’m measuring off of, or if I’m hitting my target. I don’t know if it’s just the spectrum of the red laser - maybe a stronger or green laser would work better in these conditions. With all of that said, indoors, this tool works reliably every single time.
The cool thing about this laser distance finder is that it has a screen on it’s face so you can see everything digitally. There’s a mode that shows you a live display of what you’re targeting, similar to using your iphone camera/screen on and seeing exactly what the camera is pointing at. You can even zoom in to make sure you’re hitting your target accurately. Electricians especially benefit from a laser like this because what we do is often running out lengths of wire and conduit. Being able to bid a job accurately means going in and not just eye balling your distances (or dragging a 25’ tape measure across the floor 10+ times).
The tool uses 3 AA batteries that appear to last for an extremely long time. I’ve used this tool several times over the past couple months and have not had any issues with it dying. The bottom of the tool has a female threaded hole in the side of it for use with a tripod. Most standard photography tripods will work with this thread pattern, or you can buy the special tripods that are sold in Home Depot as they will work as well. The last thing I like about this laser is that it comes with a nice nylon case which helps protect it when storing or carrying it. It’s a sturdy case, not just a cheap floppy one like some of their other lasers. I feel safe dropping this tool while it is in it’s case because it is a stout build that cushions rather than just covers.

I think it is by far the best distance measuring tool I’ve ever used, however, not being able to come through on the promise of outdoor use is really disappointing. I’m giving this tool 4 out of 5 stars for the simple fact that I feel like they failed with marketing. For what it can do indoors it’s worthy of a solid 5 stars, but it fails outdoors and will only be used half the time for half the purposes it’s marketed for. Still worth having in your collection of tools if you do a lot of indoor measuring over large distances.
