I’ve been a Makita fan ever since I first strapped up tools and started down the path of Electrician-hood. Something about the color, and maybe the fact that a bunch of the guys I worked around had them, but I didn’t want any other drills once I set my hands on a Makita set.
I’ve since moved on to try many other brands of drills and I definitely have my favorites for different circumstances. One thing that sets Makita apart is that they’re focused on reducing the size of most of their power tools. When working above your head on a lift, having a tool that is lightweight and small can be of huge importance after hours of work. The only downside I’ve seen personally is that this tends to come at a cost of durability. It doesn’t need to, but it does seem that where Makita is spending their development dollars these days is on size, not on durability and longevity.
All of those things aside, this drill is a beast of a tool. I have 4 different models of Makita impact drivers, and this new brushless version is definitely the best of them all. I love that they’ve started putting different speeds on the drivers so you don’t automatically over-power everything you drill. A lot of times with the older style impacts you’d go to screw something in with finesse by feathering the trigger but then accidentally crush whatever it is you were drilling with the head of the screw. With the 3 speed settings you can be gentle, normal, or powerful all at the push of a button.
I don’t know many drills or impact drivers out on the market these days that don’t have a light on them, so I won’t spend too much time on it but it is a great thing to have on any drill. A lot of times when you’re drilling and your light source is behind you, your body casts a shadow over the object you’re working on. This is especially troublesome in dark rooms. Having a light on the drill is just plain awesome.
This kit comes with (2) 18v LXT Lithium Ion batteries and a charger so it’s essentially everything you need in a drill kit. The batteries have a fuel gauge on the back side so you can see what your current battery level is. Up until a couple years ago batteries did not have this feature, but nowadays almost every battery you buy for a power tool will have this feature.

The Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Quick-Shift Mode 3-Speed Impact Driver (model XDT14T) is a best-in-class fastening solution for users who want more torque, longer run-time and precision fastening features. The XDT14T delivers all of the above in a compact size with a superior power-to-weight ratio. The XDT14T combines a full 1,550 in. lbs. of fastening torque with category-leading precision features. Quick-Shift Mode uses the brushless motor's electronic controls to find the best balance of speed and torque for each application for more efficient fastening. Another precision feature is Tightening Mode (T-mode), which downshifts, reduces rotation and impact speed prior to driving the screw into place and is engineered to minimize screw thread stripping, screw breakage and damage to work. These precision features, combined with 3-speed power settings, give users more control for a wide range of fastening tasks - from cabinet screws and deck screws to lag bolts and much more. It is only 4-5/8 in. L and ideal for work in tight spaces. It's part of Makita's expanding 18-Volt Lithium-Ion system, the world's largest cordless tool system powered by 18-Volt Lithium-Ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18-Volt Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger.
