I have the fortune of having almost every type of charger and battery pack that Milwaukee makes, and this little guy is getting reviewed because of its value, more than its impressive power or amazing features. This is a great starter kit if you use the M12 (12-volt lithium-ion) battery and tool system and it comes at an affordable price.
The M12 system, for those of you who are unfamiliar with Milwaukee’s power tools, is a 12-volt Lithium-Ion compatible tool and battery platform. All of the M12 batteries have the same “termination” into their chargers and tools, and it is meant for only 12-volt specific tools. There is an M18 system as well, that is much “beefier” and houses a larger 18-volt array of battery packs inside. They only work with M18 tools, just like the M12 only work with 12-volt tools.
Milwaukee does have a couple styles of “combination chargers” that allow you to charge both the M12 and M18 batteries in the same charger. This has become a life-saver for me since I have batteries, lights, and tools that require both systems. It’s great to not have to carry around separate chargers for each type of battery. However the cost of the combo charger is a little more, as it should be.
The M12 batteries have a “fuel gauge” on them that displays the available battery life, so you can easily know how much longer you have before your battery will die. Most batteries now-days have this feature though so its not TOO big of a bragging right, but still worthy of mentioning.
All things considered this charger is 4-star worthy, but only because Milwaukee has better options out there. This is meant to be a starter kit so you can get your M12 collection of tools off the ground. I do prefer the chargers that come as a combination with the M12 and M18 system because I have both and use both. But for the users of strictly M12 tools, this is all you need to start.
